Missouri’s First Lady Helps Open Exhibit Showcasing Nation’s First Ladies

JEFFERSON CITY–First Lady Melanie Blunt today joined the St. Louis Historical Society and the City of St. Louis’s First Lady Kim Slay to open the First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image exhibit at the Missouri History Museum.

“It is a great honor and a wonderful privilege to serve as First Lady of the state of Missouri. I am inspired by the women who have served in this role before me and encouraged by the stories of those who have also served our nation,” Mrs. Blunt said. “The women featured in this exhibit have played a role in our country’s social, cultural and political movements, have dedicated their time and passion to countless efforts, and have stood by their spouses through decisions and actions that shape our nation. It is truly an honor to showcase this collection in our state.”

First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image is a traveling exhibit modeled after the permanent exhibition of the same title at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. According to the Smithsonian website, it examines the uniquely American institution of “first lady” and celebrates the remarkable individuals who have occupied this demanding post.

The collection features more than 150 pieces including inaugural and evening gowns, White House furnishings and china, photographs and portraits, and campaign and personal memorabilia that are complemented by information displays, videos, and audio recordings of our first ladies.

The exhibit will be on display at the Missouri History Museum thru May 7th. For tour information and museum hours visit www.mohistory.org or call (314)746-4599.
