FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE First Lady Promotes 'Pink Plates' to Increase Breast Cancer AwarenessJEFFERSON CITY - First Lady Melanie Blunt is helping to increase awareness about the threat of breast cancer by promoting the Missouri Women's Council breast cancer awareness license plate, known as the 'pink plate'. "Pink license plates are a great way for Missourians to show their support for this important cause," Mrs. Blunt said. "Like many Missouri families, my family has been touched by breast cancer, and I applaud the Women's Council for their commitment to promoting the importance of self exams and early detection." October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. In Missouri, nearly 4,000 women will be diagnosed this year with breast cancer. The Missouri Women's Council is committed to improving women's well being and supporting this important cause with the breast cancer awareness plate. "Every cent that is collected, which is $25 per plate per year, is used for the sole purpose of providing breast cancer services to women who are either uninsured or underinsured," said Mary Cottom, executive director of the Women's Council. "Those services include but are not limited to screening, treatment, staging, and follow-up services." To purchase a pink plate, drivers should make a tax-deductible donation of $25 for a one-year license renewal or $50 for a two-year renewal to the Friends of the Missouri Women's Council. Send a check, along with a completed application, in care of Pink Plate, PO Box 1684, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102. For more information or to receive an application, contact the Missouri Women's Council at (573) 751-0810 or toll free in Missouri at (877) 426-9284.
