Governor and First Lady to Host Blood Drive

Public encouraged to donate and help patients at local hospitals

JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt and First Lady Melanie Blunt will host a blood drive for the Community Blood Center (CBC) at the Governor’s Mansion on Monday, October 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“This is an excellent opportunity to fill a community need and to realize the importance of giving blood,” Blunt said. “Blood donation is a worthy cause, and Melanie and I are honored to help the Community Blood Center.”

Area hospitals have experienced an increased demand for blood resulting in a dangerously low supply. The CBC provides blood products for patients in over 75 hospitals including St. Mary’s Health Center and Capital Region Medical Center.

Did you know:

  • CBC needs 580 donors each day to meet area hospitals' needs.
  • CBC sends out almost 3,000 units of blood components each week to treat patients in over 75 area hospitals.
  • Donors are eligible to give blood every 56 days.
  • The requirements for a blood donor are few. All who appear to donate must be at least 16 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.

Earlier this year, Blunt signed Senate Bill 1197 expanding opportunities for blood donation by allowing individuals who are 16 years old to donate blood after obtaining written permission or authorization from their parent or guardian.

Donors can schedule an appointment online at www.esavealifenow.org. If you have questions about the blood drive, please call Donor Recruiter Bruce Bolzenius at (573) 338-1383.
