Blunt Announces $5.6 Million in Anti-Meth Funding for Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY– Gov. Matt Blunt announces the award of over $5.6 million in Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grants (JAG) to law enforcement agencies throughout the state. The grants and tough anti-meth legislation signed by the governor in 2005 will help with Missouri's ongoing efforts to combat meth and eliminate dangerous lab operations across the state.

"In order to tackle Missouri's drug problem, we must channel our energies and assets into key anti-drug efforts and bolstering resources for law enforcement," Blunt said. "The safety of our communities relies on vigilant law enforcement to fight meth and other drugs that destroy Missouri families."

Thirty-five agencies will receive part of the $5,609.666.27 federal grant awarded to Missouri. All components of the criminal justice system, such as, crime investigation, justice information sharing initiatives, drug and gang task forces, and domestic violence programs, will be supported by the grants.

Some agencies have applied to use award money to fund Drug Task Forces (DTFs). Task force members investigate, arrest and assist in the prosecution of those who manufacture, distribute and transport illegal narcotics in Missouri. All programs funded through the Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Program (CJLE) identify state and local initiatives, which assist the overall effectiveness of the state and local criminal justice system.

The grant funds are provided through the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance and are administered by the Missouri Department of Public Safety. Below is a breakdown of cities and counties awarded for 2007.

During 2006, law enforcement officials throughout the state responded to, seized or investigated 1,284 laboratory incidents, which included chemical/equipment/glassware seizures, dumpsites and operational laboratories. To compare, in 2005, there were 2,252 meth lab incidents.
