Blunt Announces Nominations to State Boards and Commissions

 

JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Governor Matt Blunt today announced his selections for various state boards and commissions. Several of the nominations are appointments initially made by former Gov. Bob Holden.

Advisory Council for Professional Physical Therapists

Christel Johnson, 30, of Kansas City will serve on the Advisory Council for Professional Physical Therapists. She is a physical therapist at Baptist Medical Center. She received a bachelor of science in biology and a master of physical therapy from Rockhurst College. The Advisory Council makes recommendations to the Board of Healing Arts. Johnson’s three-year term will expire in October 2007.

Advisory Committee for 911 Service Oversight

Linward Appling, 63, of Jefferson City, Carol Freeman, 60, of Cabool and Peggy Loman, 50, of Kansas City will serve on the Advisory Committee for 911 Service Oversight. Appling is currently serving as a commissioner on the Missouri Public Service Commission and has served in state government for 30 years. He received a bachelor of arts in business and social science from Coker College in South Carolina and a master of arts in political science and public health administration from Wichita State University in Kansas.

Freeman is the executive director of the Wright and Texas County Emergency 911 service and has served in this position since 1993. Freeman graduated from Houston High School and Mountain Grove School of Cosmetology before owning a salon, and working as an assessor in Texas County.

Loman, a certified paramedic, works as a system status controller, communications supervisor, and field supervisor for Emergency Providers, Inc. an operations contractor for the Metropolitan Ambulance Services Trust (MAST). Loman completed her emergency medical technician training at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield and received her paramedic certification from Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City. Loman has prior experience on the advisory committee as the emergency medical services representative since 2000.

The 16-member Advisory Committee for 911 Service Oversight serves to ensure an emergency telephone number is available and efficient for citizens in all jurisdictions throughout Missouri. Appling’s term will expire in April 2006 and Freeman’s term will end in April 2008.

Board of Examiners for Hearing Instrument Specialists

Linda Curbow, 47, of Nixa will join the eight-member Board of Examiners for Hearing Instrument Specialists. She is the director of audiology at Ferrell-Duncan Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic in Springfield. Curbow received a bachelor of science in speech pathology and audiology from Nazareth College in New York, a master of science in audiology from Ithaca College in New York and a doctoral of audiology from the Arizona School of Health Sciences.

The Board of Examiners for Hearing Instrument Specialists is a licensure, review and penal body for all hearing instrument specialists in the state. Curbow’s appointment will expire in January 2008.

State Committee for Social Workers

Jenise Comer, 54, of Kansas City will serve on the State Committee for Social Workers. Comer is a professor of social work at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. She received a bachelor of science in sociology and a bachelor of science in psychology from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and a master of social work from the University of Kansas.

The seven-member advisory committee guides the division of social services. Comber first was appointed to the State Committee for Social Workers by former Gov. Mel Carnahan. Her term will expire in October 2007.

Missouri Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities

Margaret Freeman, 50, of Poplar Bluff was nominated to serve on the Missouri Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities. She serves on the Parent Advisory Committee for the Southeast Missouri Autism project and the Parent Advisory Committee for the State Autism Project. Freeman received a licensed practical nursing degree from Jones County Community College in Massachusetts and an associates degree as a registered nurse from Hinds Junior College in Massachusetts.

The 22-member Missouri Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities supports, promotes and plans for those with developmental disabilities who desire to increase their independence. Freeman’s term will expire June 2007.

State Board of Barber Examiners

Blunt nominated Arlene McClendon, 49, of Berkeley to serve on the State Board of Barber Examiners. McClendon is a professional barber and instructor at the Current Trends Academy in St. Peters. She graduated from University City High School and the International Hair Institute in St. Louis.

McClendon was first appointed to the State Board of Barber Examiners in 2001. The four-member board consists of three professional barbers and one public member who oversee the licensing of barbers, shops, and schools in Missouri. McClendon’s term will expire in April 2008.
