Families Applaud Blunt's Support for Autism Diagnosis and Treatment
JEFFERSON CITY– Gov. Matt Blunt today addressed a rally of Missouri families who came to the Capitol to express their support for his proposed funding increase for autism diagnosis and treatment.
"As families already facing autism, you know how essential early diagnosis and treatment is in enhancing the potential of your children," Blunt said. "I am committed to providing the necessary support Missouri's autistic children deserve that will help make a positive impact on their lives."
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the 6th most prevalent disability and the second most common developmental disability in the United States. Missouri currently serves more than 4,200 young Missourians with an ASD diagnosis across their lifespan. The governor's recommendation to increase funding will help expand ASD services for children. It will provide:
- $500,000 to create an intensive day treatment program at the Ozark Center in Joplin, the first of its kind in Missouri
- $2.4 million to reduce the waitlist for autism diagnosis and treatment by expanding staff and training.
- $1 million for Missouri's five autism projects.
