Blunt Recognizes AmeriCorps Volunteers During Missouri AmeriCorps Week
JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Matt Blunt today presented a proclamation honoring AmeriCorps, a network of local, state and national service programs that connect more than 70,000 volunteers each year.
"AmeriCorps volunteers help address critical needs in Missouri communities and throughout the United States, most recently helping local communities begin to coordinate long-term recovery projects following the recent flood," Gov. Blunt said. "From programs that provide tutoring and mentoring disadvantaged youth to helping communities respond to disasters, AmeriCorps deserves our commendation for their outstanding civic service."
"National AmeriCorps Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate an amazing program and all of the AmeriCorps Members and alumni that give of themselves and dedicate at least a year of their life to community service," said Linda Jackson, executive director of the Missouri Community Service Commission. "This event is also a great way to raise awareness about AmeriCorps – this country’s best-kept secret."
AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and community organizations nationwide. Since 1994, more than 400,000 men and women have provided needed assistance to millions of Americans across the nation through their AmeriCorps service.
