Blunt Honored for His Efforts on Behalf of Missouri’s Children

ST. LOUIS–Gov. Matt Blunt will receive the Our Love for Kids Just Keeps on Growing award honoring his work on behalf of the health care needs of Missouri’s children at an awards ceremony this evening.

"It is a great honor to accept this award," Blunt said. "I am proud of the work my administration has done to improve the quality of life for Missouri’s children."

This is the twenty-fourth annual award and honors individuals from the bi-state area who have significantly contributed to the health care needs of children. The governor will be honored along with other legislators this evening at the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital Legislative Reception and Child Advocate of the Year Award Ceremony.

During last legislative session, Blunt worked to preserve eligibility levels for children receiving health coverage through the Missouri Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP). The CHIP program provides healthcare to over 70,000 children.

Blunt fulfilled his campaign promise to provide Missouri’s public schools with more funds. He worked with the General Assembly and was able to secure a significant $158 million increase for Missouri’s students.

Last June Blunt announced improvements to Missouri’s newborn screening program. As of July 1, 2005, Missouri now screens for 27 conditions instead of five. Expanding newborn screenings makes it possible for physicians to find disorders early in order to treat and prevent severe medical complications.

To help combat childhood obesity Blunt launched his Healthy Missourians Initiative last July. The goal of the initiative is to encourage a healthier lifestyle for children and their families.
