Blunt Encourages Fire Departments to Apply for Federal Grant
JEFFERSON CITY– Gov. Matt Blunt encourages Missouri's fire departments to apply for grants available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
"Missouri firefighters put their lives on the line to protect citizens and property," Blunt said. "These federal grants help provide the resources which enable an effective emergency response for our communities."
More than $492.3 million will be awarded through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program during the fiscal year 2007. Awards are allocated on a competitive basis and are done through two AFG programs.
The Operations and Safety program distributes funding for activities such as training, equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities. The Vehicle Acquisition program prioritizes assets such as rescue vehicles, ambulances, brush trucks, foam units, fireboats and aerials.
Applicants are encouraged to submit projects that involve more than one jurisdiction and further integrate regional response capabilities. Applications are available online at the following three locations: http://www.firegrantsupport.com, http://www.usfa.fema.gov, and http://www.grants.gov. The application period ends May 4, 2007.
