Statement from Governor Matt Blunt on the First Steps Program
"Today, I am reaffirming my commitment to Missouri's children with developmental disabilities. Many people believe that the First Steps program does not deliver services as effectively as it could. That is why I have repeatedly called for a change in the program so that private insurance and not Missouri taxpayers pick up the bill whenever possible. Medicaid should also be used if it can cover some of these special services.
"I care about the children in the First Steps Program. That is why I have directed my staff to meet with service providers to determine how we can best craft a new program that ensures the same level of services are being provided to the children. I am committed to finding a solution that guarantees these services will be provided to the children who need them."
