Blunt, First Lady Go Red for Missourians Heart Health

JEFFERSON CITY–Wearing a red tie for the occasion, Gov. Matt Blunt today issued a proclamation recognizing the importance of the ongoing fight against heart disease and joined First Lady Melanie Blunt and American Heart Association volunteers to celebrate Wear Red Day for Women.

“Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women in our state,” Gov. Blunt said. “The good news is that heart disease can largely be prevented. I am encouraging Missourians to join Melanie and I and Go Red for Women to help raise awareness about heart disease and to encourage healthy lifestyles that promote heart health, prevention and wellness.”

In a proclamation ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion, Gov. Blunt declared today, February 14, “Wear Red Day for Women” in Missouri. The governor’s proclamation urges all citizens to show their support for women and the ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke by wearing red.

Mrs. Blunt serves as the Honorary Go Red for Women Chair for the State of Missouri. “We are all at risk for heart disease; it ignores no one and excludes no one,” said Mrs. Blunt. “I hope Missourians will take small steps to protect their heart and make heart healthy choices a way of life.”

Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s national call to increase awareness about heart disease and to inspire women to take charge of their heart health. Missouri communities host Heart Balls, Wear Red Days and other events throughout February to help celebrate Go Red for Women.
