Blunt to Appoint Mizzou Graduate to UM Board of Curators

JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt today announced he will appoint Judith Haggard (D) of Kennett for a seat on the University of Missouri Board of Curators.

“Judith Haggard understands the importance of higher education,” Blunt said. “Her outstanding background will serve her well on the Board of Curators.”

Mrs. Haggard is a family nurse practitioner at SEMO Health Network. Mrs. Haggard earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a master’s of nursing from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She began her career in 1967 as a clinical instructor at the Kansas City Research Hospital, School of Nursing. In 1970 Mrs. Haggard moved to southeast Missouri. She served as director of In-Service Education at Chickasawba Hospital in Blytheville and taught health occupations at Kennett High School. After receiving a clinical therapist and substance abuse counselor certification in 1987, Mrs. Haggard worked for 11 years at Family Counseling Center in Kennett. She then began serving as a board examiner for the Missouri Substance Abuse Examiners Board, and continues that effort today.

Mrs. Haggard founded the Dunklin County Hospital volunteer program, and has served as a board member for both the Delta Children’s Home and Visiting Nurses’ Association. She received the Community Service Award in 1994. That award is given annually for outstanding work in the community. Mrs. Haggard is a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kennett, where she serves as an elder. She is married to David Haggard, a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia and has two children who also graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

The Board of Curators is the governing body of a four-campus system including the University of Missouri-Columbia, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Missouri-Rolla and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. State law requires that the board be filled by a certain number of Republicans and Democrats from each of Missouri’s nine congressional districts.

Mrs. Haggard’s appointment is subject to Senate confirmation. She replaces Dr. Anne Ream of West Plains whose term expires Jan. 1, 2007. Mrs. Haggard would represent the 8th Congressional District on the Board of Curators.
