KC Area Transportation Authority Receives Federal Transportation Grants
KANSAS CITY—Gov. Matt Blunt announced that the Federal Transit Administration awarded the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) $5,627,375 in federal grants.
KCATA received a $1,030,000 grant that will fund the Longview Connector and Truman Medical Center Connector routes in areas not previously served by public transportation. The grant will also be used to increase the regularity of buses serving Kansas City International Airport and the downtown transit center. The grant will fund a new 35th Street route that will provide weekend service to the Kansas City VA Hospital and a new Westside Metroflex service featuring a new on-demand circulator bus. In all, the grant will help to provide more dependable and responsive transit service for individuals to employment centers and related activities.
KCATA received a $1,744,666 grant to help continue the Job Access transportation services for the Unified Government located in the Kansas City, Kansas service area with connections to other routes and locals in the Kansas City metro area.
KCATA also received a $2,852,709 grant to help complete the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fixed route project. The BRT route runs from downtown Kansas City to midtown serving major employment centers and connecting service at transit centers. The grant will also be used to obtain real-time signage equipment and fund additional shelters and markers.
KCATA is an interstate agency between Missouri and Kansas. The ATA has a seven-county jurisdiction: Cass, Clay, Jackson, and Platte in Missouri; and Johnson, Leavenworth, and Wyandotte in Kansas. The Authority is governed by a board of commissioners, five from Missouri and five from Kansas.
