Blunt Honors Korean War Veterans Service to Freedom and Country
JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt proclaimed today as Korean War Veterans Day in recognition of the Korean War veterans' commitment to our freedom and service to country.
"Our veterans put their lives on the line to protect our freedom at home, defend our allies and bring liberty to millions of people who lived under repressive regimes," Blunt said. "Sadly, the generation of servicemen and women who served our country in the Korean War have not always been given the credit they deserve. These veterans made tremendous sacrifices and they too deserve our appreciation. On Korean War Veterans Day I ask all Missourians to remember those brave men and women who are part of an unparalleled force for liberty and freedom throughout our world."
Gov. Blunt asks all Missourians to observe today with appropriate honors and remember these brave men and women in their prayers. Blunt also asks all Missourians to remember our military men and women currently serving in harms way all around the world and to pray for their safe return to their family and friends.
The governor has worked to support Missouri's veterans and military families. This year the governor signed legislation to enact additional protections for War on Terror Veterans to ensure that their jobs, wages and benefits were kept for them during the time they were called to serve our country. The governor also signed legislation that established the Stolen Valor Act to put in law punishments for those who impersonate military heroes and that increases grants to fund Veterans Service Officers.
Gov. Blunt took decisive action to protect military families when he signed "The Edward Lee Myers Act". The act protects Missouri families' right to honor our heroes and makes it clear Missouri will not tolerate protests that disturb those who are mourning the loss of a military hero.
Gov. Blunt is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and serves as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserves. The governor has visited with Missouri troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Mexican Border to acknowledge their commitment to defending our freedom.
