First Lady Encourages Participation in Lewis and Clark Essay Contest

JEFFERSON CITY–First Lady Melanie Blunt encourages all of Missouri’s sophomore and junior high school students to enter the National Guard’s Lewis and Clark Youth Rendezvous essay contest.

The Lewis and Clark Youth Rendezvous recognizes the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Students nationwide who will be high school juniors or seniors during the 2006-2007 school year are eligible to enter the essay contest. Ten Missouri students will be chosen to participate with representatives from around the country in the Youth Rendezvous earning an all-expense paid trip to North Dakota to attend the National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Signature Event.

"This contest provides Missouri students with a great opportunity to express their creativity and at the same time learn about the history of the Lewis and Clark expedition," Mrs. Blunt said.

Students’ essays should address the question, "What military value: loyalty; duty; respect; selfless-service; honor; integrity or personal courage describes the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery journey and why?" Essays must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words, and include a title page, bibliography and filled out entry form. Entry forms and complete contest details are available online at www.lcyouthrendezvous.com. Essays must be received by midnight Feb. 28, 2006.
