Blunt Launches New Gateway to Nation's Longest River Water Trail

JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt today launched an Internet site for the Missouri River Lewis and Clark Water Trail, which at 550 miles will be the longest river water trail in the country. The new site will serve as a gateway to information about the trail and related resources.

"The Lewis and Clark Water Trail has the potential to duplicate the tourism and economic success of the Katy Trail State Park by aiding in the resurgence of Missouri communities along the former railroad route and river," Blunt said. "This helpful Internet site will make it easy for Missourians and visitors from across the nation to learn more about the outstanding opportunities for adventure tourism along the Lewis and Clark Water Trail."

Beginning today those interested can visit www.missouririverwatertrail.org to learn more about Missouri's new river water trail. The new site is the culmination of a joint effort among the Departments of Conservation, Economic Development's Division of Tourism and the Department of Natural Resources. Last September, Blunt called on the agencies to work together to help turn the Missouri River into the nation's longest river water trail. The Lewis and Clark Water Trail is expected to tap into the growing nature and adventure tourism trade by encouraging and facilitating the use of the Missouri River by canoeists and kayakers.

With 150 miles of the Katy Trail State Park's 225 miles already along the river, many amenities already exist to support the water trail. The water trail Internet site brings all of this information together in one user friendly place.
