Blunt Appoints Long as Chairman of Probation and Parole Board

JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt has appointed Steve Long as Missouri’s Probation and Parole Board Chairman.

"Steve Long brings 32 years of Department of Corrections experience to this position," Blunt said.  "He has a vast knowledge of corrections and is committed to public safety.  I am pleased he has agreed to lead this very important board."

Mr. Long, 54 of St. Thomas, has served since October 2006 as director of the Division of Offender Rehabilitative Services (DORS) in the Missouri Department of Corrections. He began his career with the department in March 1975 as a Corrections Officer I at Moberly Correctional Center. Mr. Long was promoted to Institutional Activities Coordinator in August 1975; Social Service Trainee in May 1976; Corrections Caseworker in May 1977; Casework Supervisor in July 1980 and Central Transfer Authority (CTA) in September 1981.

He was promoted to Missouri Eastern Correctional Center (MECC) Associate Superintendent in June 1983, and has served as Superintendent at MECC, St. Mary’s Honor Center and Farmington Correctional Center.  From 1986-2006, Mr. Long served as assistant director for the Division of Adult Institutions (DAI).  Mr. Long holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Truman State University.  His appointment to the board is subject to Senate confirmation for a term ending on Aug. 28, 2012.

Missouri’s Probation and Parole Board is responsible for determining if an inmate in the Department of Corrections is eligible for parole or conditional release.  The board is also responsible for supervising the approximately 69,000 individuals on probation and parole in Missouri.  The board also investigates and reports to the governor on all applications for pardons, commutations of sentence, reprieves or restorations of citizenship.
