Blunt Praises University of Missouri’s Commitment to Economic Development

JEFFERSON CITY—Gov. Matt Blunt today praised the University of Missouri’s bold decision to create the position of vice president for research and economic development to enhance Missouri’s ability to create jobs and compete in the global economy.

"I have pledged to make our universities major economic engines in creating jobs and improving Missourians’ quality of life, and today’s announcement by the University of Missouri is an unprecedented step toward that goal," Blunt said. "I would especially like to thank President Elson Floyd for being our partner in what is one of the most progressive and aggressive visions for job creation and economic growth this state has ever seen."

Blunt said the new vice president position to be held by John C. Gardner will be invaluable in taking full advantage of the University of Missouri’s excellence in academics and research and to advance the commercialization of new technologies developed there specifically for the purpose of creating new jobs and high-tech companies in the state.

"By harnessing the academic and research expertise at the University of Missouri we are going to be able to jump-start our economic development efforts in new and exciting ways," Blunt said. "This is a historic opportunity to use our best and brightest to improve the lives of all Missourians."
