Office Maintenance Costs Come in Under Budget at Capitol
Dangerous Asbestos, Mold Successfully Removed

JEFFERSON CITY - The Office of Administration today announced that after years of neglect, much-needed maintenance to the Capitol’s executive branch offices including the removal of dangerous asbestos and mold has been completed for $7,000 less than original estimates.

The project cost $22,752 which is well below the original estimate of $30,000 and involved routine maintenance that in some cases had been put off for 20 years. In keeping with the administration’s commitment of spending taxpayer money wisely, existing state materials including carpet squares, ceiling tiles and high efficiency light fixtures were used as part of the project.

"We are pleased that this important safety and health maintenance project has been completed for less than original state estimates and far less than the estimates made by some members of the Legislature," said Paul Sloca, assistant communications director for Gov. Matt Blunt. "The governor believes that it is his duty to spend taxpayer dollars wisely and that’s exactly what was done with this important maintenance project."

In fact, the amount spent on the executive office maintenance was five times less than the $125,000 in taxpayer money expended on the inauguration of former Gov. Bob Holden and less than half the $50,000 spent by former Gov. Mel Carnahan for a single carpet in the governor’s executive office.

"The Missouri Capitol is one of the most beautiful in the country and should be maintained for the people of Missouri," Sloca said. "After years of neglect that lead to the development of an unhealthy work environment, the executive offices are now areas where the governor’s staff can best carry out the people’s business."
