Blunt Places Parks and Soils Tax Question on August Ballot
JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt today announced that he has taken action to place the parks and soils tax question on the August ballot for voter consideration.
The question asks Missouri voters if they want to continue paying a sales tax to support soil and water conservation. Originally slated for the November ballot Blunt decided to move the question to the August ballot because of six other ballot questions that voters may have to review for November.
“This is an issue a majority of Missouri voters are already familiar with and likely have already decided how they will cast their ballot,” Blunt said. “This move will allow them to analyze more thoroughly the numerous ballot questions that could appear on the November ballot in addition to the candidates for various federal, state and local offices.”
The parks-and-soils tax is a statewide one-tenth-of-one percent sales tax that provides funding for Missouri state parks and historic sites and soil and water conservation. The tax is divided equally between two efforts. Missouri voters first approved the tax in 1984 and have renewed it twice since. The tax is set to expire November 2008 unless renewed.
