Blunt Appoints Thompson Acting Chairman of Parole Board
JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Matt Blunt appointed Dana Thompson acting chairman of the Board of Probation and Parole. Blunt appointed Thompson to the board on March 2, 2005 and he was confirmed by the Missouri Senate on March 10.
Thompson currently serves as the acting district administrator for the Columbia Probation and Parole office. He oversees policy and procedure, and case management relating to supervision of probationers and parolees. Thompson is a past president of the Missouri Probation and Parole Officers Association.
Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from Central Missouri State University. Thompson served as an active duty military police officer from 1976 through 1992. He is a retired US Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel.
Thompson’s appointment ends at the pleasure of the governor. He replaces Denis Agniel who retired.
The Board of Probation and Parole determines the release of individuals from confinement in the Division of Adult Institutions through parole or conditional release. The board conducts monthly parole hearings. If a release date is set the board determines whether placement in release strategies such as electronic monitoring, residential facilities and community release centers is appropriate. The board stipulates special conditions in order to address specific offender needs and improve the opportunity for success under supervision. They also monitor the supervision of offenders in the community and return those offenders to prison who are a risk to the community.
