Blunt Joins Holiday Tradition; Rings Salvation Army Bell

JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt joined Jefferson City Salvation Army Captain Terry Selvage today at Schnucks to ring the bell for the Army’s 2006 Tree of Lights Campaign.

“I am grateful for the generous support offered by countless groups like the Salvation Army that reach out to Missourians during the holiday season and all year round,” Blunt said. “It is an honor to participate in the Salvation Army’s annual campaign and be a part of the memorable holiday tradition of outreach and care.”

The Jefferson City Salvation Army covers five counties: Cole, Callaway, Miller, Moniteau and Osage. The local campaign’s goal is to raise $165,000. Funds are used for the Army’s emergency shelter, social services, utility assistance, eviction assistance and a food pantry. Selvage says the food pantry serves 30-45 residents each morning.

“It’s superb that Gov. Matt Blunt is taking time out of his busy schedule to do this,” Selvage said. “It shows the support the governor has for the Salvation Army and for all our state’s charitable organizations and volunteers.”

The 2006 Tree of Lights Campaign will continue through December 23.
