Blunt’s Common Sense Philosophy Leads Revenue to Save $500,000
JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt today announced the Department of Revenue will begin using postcards for January motor vehicle renewals instead of letter form notices, a change that will save about half a million dollars annually.
"This is just another example of how common sense solutions can add up to significant savings for taxpayers," Blunt said. "I commend the department for taking my direction to improve efficiency and eliminate waste and for implementing a practical change that improves customer service and saves the state from unnecessary costs."
Bulk postcard postage rates are about $.10 cheaper than rates for bulk letter mail.
Customers renewing in person are asked to present their renewal notice at their local license office. The postcard notices are unique for each registration and include:
- A Personal Identification Number (PIN) on the top front of the notice if a motor vehicle registration is eligible for online renewal at www.plates.mo.gov
- A list of specific requirements necessary for the renewal printed on the front of the notice. For example, it will indicate if safety or emissions inspections are required or if a physician’s statement is required to renew disabled plates
- Registration and processing fees clearly stated for a one-year registration and, if available, a two-year registration
"These new renewal postcards are a win-win," said department director Trish Vincent. "Now they are saving taxpayers’ money on postage, and soon they’ll save time as well."
Barcodes on each renewal notice will eventually streamline motor vehicle renewals by allowing for automatic data entry.
