Shape Up Missouri Kicks off Monday
JEFFERSON CITY—Shape Up Missouri, a Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health program, will kick off Monday, Sept. 26 with events across the state.
"I am pleased with the response we have seen throughout the state to this call to improve physical fitness," Blunt said. "It is great to see so many communities, local officials and Missouri families taking such an active interest in encouraging healthy living. I wish all the participants the best of luck and hope others follow the good example being set throughout Missouri."
Teams have been formed in more than fifty communities, showing Missourians’ concern about their health and their desire to shape up. Team leaders will start reporting on members’ participation next week.
Independence has dubbed their two-part Shape Up Missouri program "Independence on the Move" and "Take Off Ten," combining a fitness program with a nutrition and weight management program. Kirksville kicks off their Shape Up Missouri program with a community walk led by State Representative Bob Behnen and his family.
Recent studies by the Missouri Department of Health found that 60 percent of Missouri adults are obese or overweight. The study lists 23 medical conditions associated with obesity including heart disease, stroke and type II diabetes.
The 3rd annual, eight-week program concludes November 18. The program pits schools against schools, businesses against businesses and communities against communities. "Best in Shape" awards will be given in several categories. The team that has the highest percentage of registrants participating weekly will be the winner of their challenge.
