Statement from Gov. Matt Blunt on USGS Decision to Close Rolla Center

The United States Geological Survey has announced they will proceed with plans to close the Mid-Continent Mapping Center in Rolla.

"This was an ill-conceived plan from the start, and I am extremely disappointed that the United States Geological Survey did not provide good answers as to how this is a cost effective move for taxpayers. In fact, even today they were unable to provide an answer relating to the cost of consolidating in Denver when compared with the lower cost of Rolla. They also seemed unconcerned about the tremendous impact on Rolla. The decision also fails to take into account the tremendous partnership opportunities with Ft. Leonard Wood.

"Clearly, this center has been an extremely efficient and effective federal office with exceptional employees. Rolla is clearly the best location for the new consolidated center and, despite our request the Department of Interior and USGS have failed to demonstrate otherwise."
