Statement from Gov. Blunt on UMR, MOHELA Partnership

Beginning during the 2007-2008 academic year, the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) will begin using the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA) Federal Family Education Loan Program as the university’s primary Stafford Loan lender.

“I applaud the University of Missouri-Rolla and the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority for their commitment to our students. This important partnership will benefit UMR engineering students through MOHELA’s engineering loan forgiveness program and models the cooperative efforts in my Lewis & Clark Discovery Initiative.

“Math and Science are quickly becoming academic cornerstones of our economy and I congratulate UMR for expanding their efforts to attract more engineering students. This new partnership will help further my goal of ensuring that Missouri’s future generations have the necessary math and science backgrounds to compete in the global economy.

“The new partnership demonstrates two important facts: one, that my Lewis & Clark Discovery Initiative holds real benefits for our students and two, that the initiative furthers MOHELA’s history of student support and loan forgiveness.”
