Blunt Calls for Quick Action to Protect Ethanol Interests
JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt today called on UL (Underwriters’ Laboratories Inc.) to certify and approve E-85 fuel pumps.
“Underwriters Laboratories’ refusal to establish a timetable for approval of an E-85 pump jeopardizes renewable fuel’s place in the market and our efforts to move Americans toward energy independence,” Blunt said. “We must act now to ensure that ethanol remains a viable fuel source in our state and nation.”
UL serves as the clearinghouse to certify and approve appliances and other consumer products. The company has approved E-85 pump components but not the actual dispensing station. In some states, pumps may not be allowed to operate without the approval.
In a letter to Keith E. Williams, UL President, the governor emphasized the need to maintain a viable market for ethanol products. He pointed out the potential detriments on the future of proposed ethanol production plants as well as investments in related research and infrastructure. Blunt asked Williams to resolve the issue as soon as possible and to be part of the solution to meeting America’s energy needs from domestic sources.
In Missouri, the Department of Agriculture has authority over E-85 pumps, and state law does not require UL certification. To ensure safe operations, the department recently increased the frequency of inspections from six to three months and will allow E-85 pumps to operate without UL approval as long as no safety risks are discovered.
UL is expected to convene a technical review panel to look more closely at the dispensing stations.
