Blunt, Steelman Pleased with Decision to Delay Closing of Federal Mapping Center in Rolla
ROLLA—Gov. Matt Blunt and State Treasurer Sarah Steelman said they were pleased with the U.S. Department of Interiors’ announcement that it will delay plans to close the Mid-Continent Mapping Center. Blunt and Steelman came out early against the proposal and urged the federal government to scrap plans to close the center citing the exceptional work done by past and current employees.
"This was an ill-conceived plan and I am pleased that the administration is giving second thoughts to closing what has been an extremely efficient and effective federal office with exceptional employees," Blunt said. "I remain committed to doing everything I can to ensure that this office and these good jobs remain in the state of Missouri."
"I am so happy for the employees of the USGS Rolla office. They have fought hard to make their case – which is one of utmost dedication and excellence in providing mapping data for our country. We still have a ways to go, and I will continue to fight my hardest, but I am encouraged and hopeful about today’s news. We all stand united in continuing to demand answers to the questions regarding this unfair action. These jobs are important to our economy, but more significantly these people and their families are vital to our community," said Steelman.
Blunt and Steelman held a meeting with Rolla employees this past Monday to listen to their concerns and offer their support.
