Blunt Appoints Bruce Davis to Chair State Tax Commission

JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Governor Matt Blunt today announced that he has appointed Bruce Davis to serve as chairman of the Missouri State Tax Commission.

Davis, 51, has served on the state tax commission since 1990. The commission measures the accuracy of assessments in each county and works with assessors to promote an accurate and fair tax assess ment program. The commission also hears taxpayers' appeals from the local Boards of Equalization, and is responsible for the statewide assess ment of the property of railroads, airlines, pipelines, electric and telecommunication companies.

The chairman of the commission serves at the pleasure of the governor. Davis holds the distinction of being the commissioner with the longest service to the tax commission. Prior to his appointment as commissioner, he served six years as administrative secretary to the commission. He has also held several positions in the Missouri Department of Revenue.

"Bruce Davis has earned a reputation as a fair-minded commissioner who understands the important role the Missouri Tax Commission plays in ensuring property values are accurately assessed and the impact tax assessments have on our state’s economy," Blunt said. "I am pleased that he has accepted this new challenge and look forward to his contributions to our efforts to improve Missouri’s economic climate."

Davis will replace Sam Leake as chairman. Davis, Leake, and Jennifer Tidwell make up the three-member state tax commission. Davis is a Republican, Leake and Tidwell are Democrats.
