Blunt Names Kremer to Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission

JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt named Gary R. Kremer to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. Kremer will represent Missouri on the Advisory Committee created to begin the planning process for the national celebration of the 2009 Bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth.

“I am pleased Gary Kremer has agreed to represent our state on this important commission,” Blunt said. “His extensive historical knowledge will benefit the group as they plan a celebration to honor one of our nation’s most significant leaders.”

Kremer, of Jefferson City, is the executive director of the State Historical Society of Missouri. The Society was founded in 1898 and scholars, genealogists, family and local historians, historic preservationists, journalists and others depend on the State Historical Society for information, guidance, and research.

Kremer also serves as director of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Lincoln University and a doctorate in history from American University. Kremer has written, co-authored, and co-edited ten books and journal articles on Missouri’s history and he previously served as the State Archivist of Missouri.

The Commission is composed of Lincoln experts, scholars and cultural leaders. The Advisory Committee will meet Feb. 13, in Washington D.C. to begin planning the bicentennial.
